You couldn't make it up (however the Chinese can!)
SINGAPORE: China‘s refining giant Sinopec Corp said on Wednesday it has jointly certified the country’s first carbon-neutral crude oil cargo with transport big Cosco Shipping and China Eastern Airlines .
The 30,000-tonne cargo was produced by Sinopec in Angola and shipped by Cosco Shipping to an east China-based Sinopec refinery for processing, Sinopec mentioned.
To offset the carbon dioxide produced through the course of from crude manufacturing to transport to consumption by automobiles and airplanes, the three state companies purchased Chinese Certified Emissions Reductions credit.
These credit that can go to investing in carbon-reducing initiatives corresponding to tree planting, photo voltaic, wind and biomass energy technology in China.

Quite other than the truth that carbon credit corresponding to these are nugatory, what in regards to the double counting concerned?
All of the photo voltaic, wind and biomass energy talked about will probably be handled as carbon free anyway, so how can China declare that this oil is simply too?
You will recall that President Xi promised just a few months in the past that China can be “carbon neutral” by 2060, fastidiously avoiding any promise of zero emissions.
Now we all know that it'll all be smoke and mirrors, with actual world emissions being masked by dodgy accounting practices.
