The first S-500 air defence system has entered service within the Moscow area. (Russian MoD)
The first S-500 55R6M Prometey (Prometheus) strategic air-defence system has entered service with a unit within the Moscow area, the TASS information company reported on 13 October, citing a supply near the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The first regimental set is to be adopted by a second within the first half of 2022, the supply added. No official announcement has been made by the MoD, however Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov advised the RIA Novosti information company in September that deliveries had been below solution to Russian forces. These preliminary S-500 items could also be supposed primarily for coaching functions or restricted service, because the Izvestia newspaper reported on 12 October that Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov has mentioned serial manufacturing and deliveries of the S-500 are scheduled for 2025.
